Yurts evolved on the exposed Central Asia Steppes where still today, they provide reliable shelter in storms and low temperatures. The original design of the yurt made an ideal nomadic home - portable protection from the elements. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurt
The basic design of a yurt remains the same wherever you go - a portable dwelling consisting of a folding lattice circular wall, with radial roof beams all leading to a central circular skylight. When examined the design is so simple yet so effective, giving protection in both the warm summers and cold winters. Our yurts are a modern adaptation of this traditional shelter and although they are classified as a tent, our contemporary yurts are far stronger and weather tight.
Each yurt is handmade in Devon, using high-grade sustainable wood. They consist of the same circular wooden frame but with a wider skylight and a more developed canvas cover, better suited to our climate in Cornwall. Read more about yurts in Cornwall. The walls are over 6ft high, which means no bending down inside the yurt and the entire floor space can be used. The lattice provides a rigid frame for the canvas and rivets hold it in place, which means no hazardous guy rope and pegs. The doors are solid wood and lock securely into the frame for when you’re out and about enjoying your holiday, and the crown - the centrepiece for our yurts, supports the superb acrylic dome that gives our yurts such a spacious and light feeling.
The 5ft wide skylight floods the yurt with natural light and allows guests to lie in bed at night looking up at the stars. Designed as low cost, environmentally friendly living space our yurts are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Though durable and sturdy they have minimal impact on the land and can be removed or repositioned without a trace – the perfect hideaway for a relaxing eco holiday.
We are often asked how portable our yurts are – the answer is very. Small yurts can be carried in the smallest of cars with ease and the walls and poles will fit in an estate car or on the roof of a smaller car. The time it takes to put up a yurt depends on the yurt’s size. In general (after doing it once or twice), we can put up our 21ft yurts in a few hours. Read more about how a yurt works.
